The Refugee Experience
I learned a lot about the refugees and there experiences they had to go through so that they can come to the U.S. We also learned a lot about immigrants from Central America. The purpose of the simulation for my group was to show the differences in acculturation and assimilation. We came up with the idea to create a game of musical chairs as an example of assimilation. We were able to make a lot of progress with our simulation because there where people who were willing to help with the simulation. I was very happy to be able to help my team out even if it was just recording the simulation and even if I wasn't really much help. These were some of the essential questions we had to answer in order to to be able to do our simulation.
The 5 essential questions:
1. Why do people immigrate to other countries?
2. What are the challenges they might face when entering a new country?
3. What is the difference between acculturation and assimilation?
4. What things are essential or necessary to achieve success in the US?
5. Is there an American dream? Is it for everyone?

Here is a slide show of our refugee simulation on acculturation and assimilation. In the beginning of the simulation everyone had a chair and everyone was together as an example of acculturation. Whenever Someone would get out of their chair they had to read the section of the card that said why they culturally assimilated and what they lost. In the end there was only one person left sitting and everyone else had lost a part of the culture or tradition. There are also pictures of our group and the process it took to make the simulation.
